POSITION TITLE: Communications Coordinator (summer student)

REPORTS TO: Manager, Fund Development and Marketing

SALARY: Full-time 37.5 hours/week for 16 weeks beginning May 3 or 10, 2010, $12.82/hr - $13.50/hr

POSITION SUMMARY: The Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting and implementing the execution of our communications, marketing and social media strategies ArtsSmarts.


ArtsSmarts is a dynamic approach to generating and sustaining innovative school partnerships centred around the arts.  We use creative inquiry to improve student engagement and cultivate 21st century learning skills that push the boundaries of learning, redefine the environment of schooling and re-imagine student success.  As a national, not-for-profit organization, we work with local, regional and provincial arts, education and community sector partnerships across Canada to bring the ArtsSmarts approach to local classrooms.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the execution of our communications, marketing and social media strategies
  • Perform general writing, proofreading and editing duties for program, website and fundraising materials
  • Coordinate the receipt of annual reports from ArtsSmarts partners: prepare project statistics, profiles and document stories for the website
  • Coordinate the ArtsSmarts monthly electronic newsletter: research, conduct interviews, write and upload content, distribute via email and maintain mailing list
  • Support the launch of our new social impact strategy: write and prepare communications materials, backgrounders, presentation and other materials as required
  • Support the coordination of the annual ArtsSmarts eXchange: provide registration, marketing and event planning assistance
  • Support the design and layout of program toolkits: translation coordination, write and edit content, work with photographer and designer on layout
  • Support the annual giving campaign: support the design and development of campaign materials, document ArtsSmarts impact stories and manage mailing lists
  • Perform communications-related administrative tasks and other tasks as required


Qualifications and Assets

  • Post-secondary student pursuing a degree in  communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or related field
  • As this position may be funded in part by Canada Summer Jobs, the candidate must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment, have been registered as full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Demonstrated skill in editing, proofreading, and writing for print and the web
  • Knowledge of the internet as a marketing and communications tool
  • Ability to learn quickly and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to work well on own and work effectively as a team player
  • Proficient in MS Office, Powerpoint and Outlook
  • Creativity, imagination, and ability to take initiative
  • Interest in arts and education issues
  • Bilingualism (French and English) an asset
